Lexus IS and RC: Which CarPlay Path Fits Your Car

The IS and RC are cars people keep. They also shipped with an infotainment system that was designed before CarPlay existed, which is why almost every owner who lands on this page is asking the same first question: do I add CarPlay behind the factory screen, or do I replace the screen entirely. That one decision changes the cost, the install, and how the car looks when you eventually sell it, so we will settle it first and then work through audio, cameras, mirroring, in-motion access and throttle response.

The one decision that shapes the whole build

Everything else on this page is an accessory. This choice is architecture. An interface leaves the factory head unit in the dash and injects CarPlay into it. A screen conversion takes the factory head unit out and puts a new screen in its place. Both are reversible in the sense that neither requires cutting into the car, but they feel different to live with and they read differently to the next owner.

The LSC-IR2 screen conversion

The LSC-IR2 replaces the factory head unit with a new screen built for this job, and CarPlay and Android Auto run on it natively rather than being piped into somebody else's hardware. It retains the factory steering wheel controls, the factory microphone, the backup camera, XM, FM and AM. There is no wire splicing and no permanent harness modification.

The reason this matters is simple. The factory IS and RC head unit was never designed to run CarPlay, so every interface that keeps it has to work within limits the original engineers set for a different job. A native screen sidesteps those compromises instead of managing them. If your priority is the best CarPlay experience the car can have, this is the path. The LGVIF interfaces

If you want the dash to stay exactly as Lexus built it, the LGVIF kits add wireless CarPlay and Android Auto behind the factory screen. You still use the factory display, the factory controls and the factory microphone, and CarPlay simply becomes another source.

Which kit you need comes down to model, year and whether the car has factory navigation. The LGVIF-CB5W is the specific one for the 2017-2020 Lexus IS with factory navigation. The LGVIF-CB3W covers 2014-2021 Lexus without factory navigation and the LGVIF-CB2W covers 2013-2021 Lexus with factory navigation. RC owners generally land on the LGVIF-CB7W, which covers 2018-2023 ES, NX, RC, RX, LS 500 and LC 500/500h with or without nav. Nav or no nav is the detail people get wrong most often, so check the car rather than the brochure.

One credential worth knowing, because it is unusual in this category: the LGVIF kits are Lexus USA approved, and select authorized Lexus dealerships carry and install them. Aftermarket CarPlay interfaces almost never carry that kind of sign-off. One practical note as well. How to actually choose

Here is the honest version. An interface keeps everything factory and reverses cleanly, which matters on a car people keep for years and then resell to somebody who wants a stock IS. A screen conversion gives you the better CarPlay experience, and it is a bigger change to the dash. Neither answer is wrong. If you plan to hold the car and you use CarPlay every single drive, the LSC-IR2 earns it. If you want the upgrade to be invisible when the car changes hands, take the LGVIF route. Audio that keeps up with the rest of the car

The IS and RC steer and stop far better than they play music. The usual symptom is not distortion, it is thinness: you reach for two more clicks of volume on a freeway merge and the sound gets louder without getting fuller. That is an amplifier problem, not a speaker problem, and it is the cheapest meaningful fix in this whole guide.

Encore Alpha amplifier kits are plug and play on the factory harness. Nothing gets cut, the factory head unit stays, and the factory speakers stay. Two families cover this platform. The ENA-2T3 and ENA-3T3 cover 2018-2026 Toyota and Lexus. The difference inside each pair is straightforward: the 3-series kits carry the dedicated RCA subwoofer output and the 2-series kits do not. If you do add a small sealed sub under a seat, the EAZ-C02 power seat cable harness powers it from the Toyota and Lexus power seat connector. No firewall grommet, no run to the battery, no trim panel you were hoping not to remove. Power seats only, which most of these cars have but not all of them do. Amplifier kits carry a 2 year warranty.

A front camera for the part of the car you cannot see

Every IS F Sport owner knows the sound. You ease into a parking space, the nose disappears below the hood line, and the front lip finds the concrete block before your eyes do. A front camera turns that guess into a picture.

The CS11A is the front camera interface for select 2014-2025 Lexus factory screens, and it comes with a selector button so you can pull the front view up when you want it. Be clear on what you are buying: the CS11A is the interface module only. The camera is a separate purchase. Pair it with the BCAM11B, which screws to the front grille, the BCAM13, which can screw-mount or use the included double-sided tape and adjustable bracket for a no-drill install, or the BCAM10AW, which mounts at the factory license plate screw location.

The other thing to be clear about: the camera gives you a picture, not a warning system. There are no beeps, no distance readouts, and it does not record like a dash cam. It shows you what is in front of the bumper on the factory screen, and on a low-nose car that is exactly the information you were missing. Putting your phone screen on the factory display

CarPlay covers navigation, music and messages. It does not cover everything, and some owners want the phone itself on the screen while parked. The HVXL05 adds an HDMI input to the factory Lexus display on select 2017+ Lexus models.

Two caveats belong up front rather than in the fine print. The HVXL05 is a special order item with a 4-week lead time, and because it is a special order it is not returnable. It also needs additional accessories to complete the mirroring setup, and those are sold separately. Order it knowing both of those things and it is a good product. Order it expecting a two-day box with everything inside and you will be annoyed with us. There are two lower-cost paths as well. The IF-02BEP fits select Toyota and Lexus without factory navigation and includes a video-in-motion controller. The IF-04BEP fits select 2013-2020 Lexus with factory navigation and includes a video and navigation in-motion controller. Both also require additional accessories, sold separately. Navigation, dialing and video while the car is moving

The factory system locks out destination entry, DVD controls and most browsing the moment the car rolls. If your passenger is the one navigating, that lockout is the whole problem. The NDS6223EP covers select 2013-2021 Lexus and Toyota with factory navigation and unlocks navigation input, DVD controls, phone dialing, music browsing and the Lexus Enform App Suite while in motion. There is no splicing, it is fully reversible, and it is made in Japan. One fitment note: the 2015-2017 Lexus GS 200t, GS 350, GS 450h and GS F need an additional harness, which is reflected in that variant's price. For newer cars, the STN7028A covers select 2018-2025 Lexus and Toyota.

The safety language Beat-Sonic publishes on the STN7028A is not boilerplate, and it applies to how you use any in-motion module. These products are not intended to be used by the driver while the vehicle is in motion. Navigating the screen, dialing or watching video while driving is dangerous and may violate local laws. Older IS owners going to an aftermarket head unit

Second-generation IS owners are a real and well-served segment here, and their answer is different from everything above. If you are putting a modern double DIN head unit in a 2006-2012 IS, the kit has to keep the parts of the car that were built into the dash around the radio.

The MVX-140L fits the 2006-2009 IS 250, IS 350 and IS-F with factory navigation. It retains the factory amplifier, the factory speakers, the factory navigation screen, the climate control and the backup camera, and it adds a video input to the factory screen. State this one plainly: the MVX-140L is not compatible with 2010 and newer IS models, because the infotainment system changed significantly with the 2010 refresh. That is not a fitment guess, it is a different system.

Without factory navigation, the SLX-140L covers the 2006-2012 IS 250, IS 350, IS-F and IS C, retaining the factory amplifier, speakers and climate control. Both kits are made in Japan, and both are automatic transmission only. If your IS is a manual, these are not your parts. Steering wheel audio controls are handled by a separate Metra Axxess ASWC-1 interface, available as an add-on. There is also the SLX-82AAD adapter, which covers the IS 250 and IS 350 from 2006-2011, the IS-F from 2008-2011, and the IS 250C and IS 350C from 2010-2011, all with Lexus Premium or Mark Levinson audio and without factory navigation, and retains the factory amplifier. Throttle response

The IS and RC have a soft first inch of pedal travel from the factory. It is a calibration choice, not a fault, and it is most obvious in the beat between the light turning green and the car deciding you meant it.
