ShiftPower Buying Guide: Which Throttle Controller Fits Your Car
A throttle response controller fixes the most annoying thing about modern drive by wire cars: the pause between pressing the pedal and the car actually going. ShiftPower removes that lag, and with over 3,000 vehicle applications there is almost certainly a module for what you drive. This guide explains what it does, what it honestly does not, and which module matches your make.
What a throttle response controller actually does
Your accelerator pedal has not been connected to a cable in years. In a drive by wire car the pedal is a sensor, and the factory computer decides how eagerly to translate your foot into throttle. Most factory mappings are tuned soft and slow on purpose, which is why a modern car can feel sleepy off the line even when the engine has plenty to give.
ShiftPower sits between the pedal and that decision. It adjusts the pedal signal so the response you asked for arrives now, not a beat later. The delay you have learned to drive around simply goes away, and the car feels awake in traffic, at on ramps, and when a gap opens and you need it.
You also get multiple drive modes, so the pedal feel is adjustable rather than one fixed setting. Run a sharper mode on a weekend backroad, something mild for commuting, and change it whenever you like. Switching modes takes seconds, so you are never stuck with one personality.
Where do you notice it most? Merging, mostly. The pause between deciding to go and the car actually going is where factory pedal lag lives, and commuters feel it a dozen times a day. Roundabouts, left turns across traffic, and two lane passes tell the same story. None of this is about top speed. It is about the vehicle doing what your foot asked, the moment it asked. If you want the deeper background first, our article on what a throttle controller is and what it does walks through the whole concept.
What it does not do
Here is the honest part most listings skip: ShiftPower does not add engine power. Your horsepower and torque are exactly what they were from the factory. What changes is how quickly that existing power shows up when you ask for it, and in day to day driving that difference is what you actually feel.
So if a seller promises a throttle controller will make your car faster in a straight line, walk away. Response is the product. Power gains are the myth.
It is also not a tune. Shift points, boost, fueling, and the factory drivability logic all stay untouched, which is exactly why the module unplugs back to stock so cleanly. If your real goal is measured gains at the dragstrip, put the budget toward engine work instead. And if you genuinely like the soft, gradual pedal your car came with, the sharp modes are not for you, though eco mode may still earn its keep on the highway.
Three questions before you buy
First, is response actually your complaint? Quick self test: if the car feels fine once rolling but takes a lazy beat to wake up from a stop or a cruise, that is pedal mapping, and ShiftPower fixes it. If the car feels short of breath everywhere, at full throttle, up long grades, past highway speed, that is an engine output question and no throttle controller will change it. Answer this honestly and you will never feel misled by us or anyone else.
Second, which module fits? Pedal connectors differ between manufacturers and even between generations of the same truck, which is why ShiftPower is sold as vehicle specific modules rather than one universal box. The table below sorts it by make, and the year selector on each product page confirms the exact fit. Toyota truck and SUV owners should read the fitment note under the table twice, because recent generation changes moved several models to different modules.
Third, what should the pedal feel like on a Tuesday? Not on the test drive. On the commute, in the rain, with coffee in the cupholder. If the answer is stock but awake, you will live in the middle modes. If it is sharper, always, the aggressive modes are waiting. If it is cheaper fuel bills, eco mode is genuinely a reason to buy on its own. You are choosing a range, not a single setting.
Eco mode: the underrated setting
ShiftPower works in both directions. Eco mode softens the pedal mapping instead of sharpening it, smoothing out aggressive inputs and encouraging gentler acceleration. For many drivers that translates into a real improvement in fuel economy, especially in stop and go commuting where heavy pedal stabs burn the most gas.
Think of it as two products in one box. Sharp modes for when you want the car eager, eco mode for road trips and fuel prices you would rather not think about.
Which throttle response controller fits your vehicle
ShiftPower modules are vehicle specific because pedal connectors differ between manufacturers. Match your make below, then confirm the exact year and model on the product page before ordering, since coverage within a make varies by generation.
| Make | Module | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota and Lexus | SP09 | Covers a wide range of Toyota and Lexus models, including the 2022 and newer Tundra and Sequoia |
| 2014-2024 Toyota 4Runner | SP26 | Toyota and Lexus models, incl. 2014-2024 4Runner |
| Toyota trucks and SUVs, earlier generations | SP07 | Tacoma, older Tundra, and more (confirm year on the product page) |
| Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ and WRX | SP27 | GR86, BRZ, WRX, and more |
| Acura and Honda | SP19, SP20, or SP31 | Module depends on model and year, check each product page |
| Ford, Chevy, GMC, Jeep | SP04 | Covers popular truck and SUV applications |
| Chevy, GMC, Cadillac | SP32 | For GM models not covered by the SP04, confirm by year |
| Hyundai, Kia, Genesis | SP12 or SP28 | Module depends on model and year |
| Everything else | Full ShiftPower collection | Over 3,000 vehicle applications and growing |
One fitment detail trips people up often enough that it deserves its own line: the 2022 and newer Tundra and Sequoia use the SP09, not the SP07, and the 2025 and newer 4Runner takes the SP09 as well. The 2014-2024 4Runner uses the SP26. The SP07 is the module for earlier Tacoma and Tundra generations, and it does not fit any 2014 or newer 4Runner, so 4Runner shoppers choose between the SP26 and the SP09 by year. When in doubt, the year selector on each product page settles it.
What owning a ShiftPower is like
After the first week the module disappears. It lives out of sight behind the lower dash, there is nothing to look at and nothing to maintain, and it does its job from the moment the ignition comes on. What stays is the absence of the pause: the vehicle steps off when your foot moves, and owners regularly tell us a stock loaner feels broken afterward.
Mode changes take seconds, so the controller adapts to the day instead of the other way around. Sharper for a weekend backroad, milder for the school run, eco for the long haul. And because it simply plugs in at the pedal connector, handing the car to a valet or selling it later needs no explanation. Unplug it and the car is bone stock again.
Two habits worth forming. Confirm the connectors are fully locked at the pedal after install, since a half seated connector causes most first day complaints. And spend a few minutes cycling through the drive modes somewhere quiet before your first commute, so the sharpest setting does not surprise you in traffic.
Install: a few minutes at the pedal
This is one of the easiest upgrades we sell. The module plugs in at the accelerator pedal connector with no wire cutting, no ECU flashing, and no tools beyond what it takes to reach under the dash. Unplug the pedal connector, plug ShiftPower in between, and secure the module. It is completely reversible, so the car returns to stock by unplugging it.
If you would rather watch it done first, we filmed a full SP09 install on a 2025 Toyota Tacoma, and nearly every product we carry has an install video on our YouTube channel. Owners often pair the install with a sound upgrade from our amplifier collection or a CarPlay interface since the interior panels are a lot less intimidating the second time. Compared to those projects, though, the pedal connector is the easy one. Most owners finish it in the driveway in well under half an hour, first attempt included.
Warranty and support
Every ShiftPower module carries a 3 year warranty, and our support team in La Mirada handles questions directly rather than routing you to an overseas form. If the companion app ever fails to list your exact model, do not worry: the vehicle selection in the app only labels which car is which for owners running ShiftPower in multiple vehicles. It has no effect on performance or settings, and you can pick a similar vehicle until yours is added.
If you remember one thing
Buy by connector, not by vibe. Every ShiftPower does the same core job and carries the same 3 year warranty, so the whole decision is matching the module to your vehicle's pedal connector and confirming the year on the product page. Get that right and everything else, the modes, eco, the app, is adjustable after the fact.
Frequently asked questions
Does a throttle response controller add horsepower?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. ShiftPower changes how quickly your engine responds to the pedal, not how much power it makes. The car feels noticeably more eager because the factory pedal lag is gone, but the dyno numbers stay the same.
Will ShiftPower void my factory warranty?
It plugs in at the accelerator pedal connector with no cut wires and no ECU changes, and it unplugs just as easily, returning the car to stock. Warranty decisions ultimately rest with your dealer, but a reversible plug and play module is about as low risk as upgrades get.
Does eco mode really improve fuel economy?
For many drivers, yes. Eco mode softens the pedal mapping, which smooths out hard acceleration and encourages a lighter foot. Your results depend on how you drive today, but drivers with a heavy commute tend to notice the difference.
The app does not list my exact model. Is that a problem?
No. The vehicle selection in the app is only a label for people running ShiftPower in more than one car. It does not affect performance, programming, or settings. Pick a similar vehicle as a placeholder, and confirm your actual fitment on the product page before buying.
How long is the warranty?
ShiftPower controllers carry a 3 year warranty. If anything acts up, our team troubleshoots it directly and takes care of you from our La Mirada facility.
