ShiftPower Install Guide: Plugged In and Driving in Minutes

Throttle controller installation is the shortest job in our catalog. There is one connector to find, one factory plug to release, and one harness to click in between. No panels come off the dash, no tools touch the engine, and most vehicles are done in roughly 15 minutes. Here is the whole process from box to first drive, including what to check before you start, where first timers slow down, and what a finished install should look and feel like.

Short answer: ShiftPower installs at the accelerator pedal connector. Unplug the factory plug at the top of the pedal assembly, connect ShiftPower inline with its OEM style connectors until each one clicks, and you are done. Plan on roughly 15 minutes for most vehicles. Unplugging it later returns the car to completely stock.

What you are actually installing

ShiftPower is a plug and play throttle response controller. It works with the signal from your accelerator pedal and changes how eagerly the vehicle responds to your right foot. Let us be straight about what that means: it does not add engine power. What it changes is the pedal mapping, so the sportier modes make the car feel more awake off the line, while eco mode softens the mapping, which helps improve fuel economy for many drivers. Our article on what a throttle controller does goes deeper if you want the full picture before buying.

Every unit is vehicle specific, with over 3,000 vehicle applications covered. The SP09 fits many Toyota and Lexus models, the SP07 covers earlier Tacoma and Tundra models and more, the SP26 covers the 2014-2024 4Runner among other Toyota and Lexus models, and the newest trucks (2022+ Tundra and Sequoia, 2025+ 4Runner) take the SP09, and the rest of the lineup lives in the ShiftPower collection, including Honda, Ford, Chevy, Hyundai and Kia applications. Match the model to your vehicle on the product page and the connectors will match too.

What arrives in the box

The box is refreshingly small: the ShiftPower control module and its inline harness with OEM style connectors, built to match your pedal assembly exactly. There is no bag of ring terminals, no fuse tap, and no roll of wire, because the install needs none of them.

Before you go near the pedal, do one check that takes thirty seconds and prevents the only real failure mode this install has: compare the model number on the unit against the model listed for your vehicle on our website. ShiftPower is not one universal box. Each unit is built for a specific set of vehicles so the connectors match the pedal connector exactly, and a mismatched model simply will not plug in cleanly. If your vehicle sits in a gray area, email us or call 714-994-1085 and we will confirm the right unit. Getting this right is the difference between a 15 minute install and a return label.

While you are still in the house with good reception, grab the ShiftPower app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Install the official store version, which runs in English by default. You will use the app after the physical install to connect to the unit and pick your drive mode, so having it ready keeps the whole job moving. And as with any work under the dash, do the plugging with the vehicle switched off, then start it once everything is clicked in.

Throttle controller installation in three steps

Here is the entire job. Read it twice and it will take longer than the install itself.

  1. Locate the accelerator pedal connector. Sit in the driver seat, look up under the dash above the accelerator pedal, and find the connector at the top of the pedal assembly. A phone flashlight helps. This is honestly the slowest part of the whole install, and the part that trips up first timers: expect five to ten minutes of craning your neck if you have never looked up there before. It is the only place in the vehicle the install touches.
  2. Unplug the factory plug. Press the release tab on the factory connector and slide it off the pedal assembly. No force needed; if it fights you, check the tab, not your grip. Connectors that will not release almost always have a tab that is not fully pressed, and prying instead of pressing is how tabs get broken.
  3. Connect ShiftPower inline. Plug the ShiftPower harness into the pedal, then plug the factory connector into the ShiftPower harness. The OEM style connectors only fit one way, so there is nothing to miswire. Press each connector until it clicks and locks, then tuck the module up under the dash where it cannot interfere with the pedals.

That click matters more than anything else on this page. A connector seated most of the way is the number one cause of a unit that acts up later, because the pedal area lives with vibration on every drive and a partial connection loses its grip one bump at a time. Give each plug a firm press and listen for the lock before you call it done.

No tools in the engine bay, and usually no tools at all

Everything happens in the driver footwell. You never open the hood, never touch the engine, and never cut, splice, or tap a wire. Most vehicles need no tools whatsoever, just your hands and a flashlight. That is also what makes ShiftPower fully reversible: pull the unit out, click the factory connector back onto the pedal, and the car is exactly as it left the factory.

What a finished install looks like

From the driver seat, nothing. That is the standard. The module sits tucked up under the dash, secured so it cannot drop into the pedal area, with no harness slack dangling near your feet. Anything that hangs where your foot travels is not finished, so take the extra minute to route and tuck until the footwell looks stock.

Behaviorally, a finished install means the app finds the unit, the mode you select changes how the pedal feels within the first block of driving, and everything else about the vehicle is untouched: cruise control, gauges, and every factory system behave exactly as they did yesterday. ShiftPower is designed to be invisible to the rest of the car.

First drive: picking your mode

With the connectors locked, start the vehicle and connect the ShiftPower app to select your mode. This is where the honest expectations pay off. The sportier modes will not make your engine stronger, but they noticeably sharpen how the car responds to the pedal. The best way to judge them is the same stretch of familiar road: drive it once in each mode over a day or two, and most drivers land on a favorite quickly.

Eco mode runs the other direction. It relaxes the pedal mapping, which can feel like the car got lazier. That is the point, and it is why eco helps fuel economy for many drivers. If a mode ever feels wrong, changing it takes seconds in the app, and our ShiftPower troubleshooting guide covers the rare cases where something genuinely needs attention.

When to stop and get us involved

Three situations are worth a pause instead of persistence. If the connectors do not match your pedal plug, stop; forcing mismatched connectors damages pins, and the fix is confirming the correct model with us, not more pressure. If the factory plug will not release, revisit the tab before prying. And if the install went smoothly but the app cannot find the unit afterward, run the reset in our troubleshooting guide: hold the button about 30 seconds until the light turns pink, close the app completely, and reconnect. A unit that fails to connect from multiple devices after that is a hardware conversation, and ShiftPower carries a 3 year warranty, so email us rather than fighting it.

DIY or the appointment path

This is the one product where we tell most people to just do it themselves: fifteen minutes, no tools, and the worst case is emailing us a question. The appointment path still exists for a reason, though. If you would rather not crawl under a dash, or you want the fitment double checked on an uncommon vehicle, our La Mirada installers will plug it in while you wait and confirm the app connection before you leave. Either path ends in the same place, so pick the one that fits your day.

Watch it done on a real Tacoma and Corolla

Seeing the install once removes any remaining doubt. We photographed and filmed the process on two very different vehicles: the SP09 install on a 2025 Toyota Tacoma and the SP09 install and drive review on a Toyota Corolla. Both follow the same three steps you just read.

If the fifteen minute win leaves you wanting more, the same plug and play approach runs through everything we build, from our Encore amplifiers to our wireless CarPlay kits. ShiftPower is just the fastest place to start.

Frequently asked questions

How long does throttle controller installation take?

Roughly 15 minutes for most vehicles. Finding the accelerator pedal connector is the only variable; the plugging itself takes a minute or two. Even a first timer working carefully rarely crosses the half hour mark.

Do I need any tools?

Usually none at all. The connectors release and lock by hand, and a phone flashlight covers the visibility. There is no drilling, no panel removal, and nothing in the engine bay.

Can I go back to stock later?

Yes, completely. Unplug the ShiftPower unit and click the factory connector back onto the pedal assembly, and the vehicle returns to exactly its factory behavior. Nothing is cut or modified during the install, so there is nothing to undo.

Will ShiftPower add horsepower?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. It changes throttle response, meaning how quickly the vehicle reacts to pedal input, not how much power the engine makes. The car feels livelier in the sportier modes, and eco mode softens the pedal mapping in a way that helps fuel economy for many drivers.

What warranty comes with it?

ShiftPower carries a 3 year warranty. If anything acts up, start with our troubleshooting guide, and if the issue cannot be resolved remotely, email info@beatsonicusa.com to open a warranty claim and get an RMA number.
