Troubleshooting

ShiftPower Troubleshooting: Unresponsive, Blinking or Reset Issues

A throttle controller not working after weeks or months of normal driving almost always comes down to something small: a connector that worked loose at the pedal, an app that needs a clean restart, or a mode setting that changed without you noticing. ShiftPower has very few parts that can fail, which makes it one of the easiest products we sell to troubleshoot. Start at the top of this guide and most drivers are back to normal in under ten minutes.

Short answer: Most ShiftPower issues resolve with three checks. Confirm both connectors are locked at the accelerator pedal, close the app completely before reconnecting, and reset the unit by pressing and holding the button for about 30 seconds until the light turns pink. If the unit still will not connect from multiple devices after those steps, contact us, because that pattern points to hardware and ShiftPower carries a 3 year warranty.

What ShiftPower is doing when it misbehaves

It helps to picture the system before you start poking at it. ShiftPower sits inline at the accelerator pedal connector: the factory plug clicks into our harness, our harness clicks into the pedal assembly, and the module shapes how the vehicle responds to your pedal input based on the drive mode you selected. The app on your phone is only the remote control for picking modes; it is not part of the driving.

That layout gives you three layers where anything can go wrong: the connectors at the pedal, the connection between app and unit, and the module itself. Nearly every complaint lives in the first two, and each layer leaves its own fingerprint, which is what the checks below are designed to read.

Throttle controller not working? Run these checks in order

Run these five checks in order before assuming the unit has failed. Each one takes a minute or two, and each one rules a specific layer in or out.

  1. Check the connectors at the pedal. Reach up under the dash above the accelerator pedal and confirm both connectors are locked in place. Press each one until it clicks. A connector sitting at 95 percent seated can pass a glance and still make poor contact, and the pedal area lives with vibration on every drive, so a plug that never fully locked on install day can walk itself loose months later. This is the most common cause we see.
  2. Cycle the ignition. Turn the vehicle fully off, open the driver door, give it a moment, then start the car again. This clears any odd state from an interrupted startup and costs you nothing to try.
  3. Confirm you have the correct model. ShiftPower units are vehicle specific, and the connectors only match when the model does. Check the model number listed for your vehicle on our website against the unit you own. The SP09 covers many Toyota and Lexus models, including the 2022 and newer Tundra and Sequoia and the 2025 and newer 4Runner. The SP26 is the unit for the 2014-2024 4Runner along with other Toyota and Lexus models. The SP07 covers the Tacoma, Tundra and more, though it is not a 4Runner unit, and the SP27 covers the GR86, BRZ and WRX. The rest of the lineup lives in the full ShiftPower collection.
  4. Check which mode is active. Open the app and look at the current mode. Eco softens the pedal mapping on purpose, so a unit sitting in eco can feel like a unit doing nothing at all. Switch to a sportier mode and drive it again before judging.
  5. Reset the unit. Press and hold the button for about 30 seconds until the light turns pink. Then close the app completely before reconnecting. The full procedure is a few sections down.

Three patterns we hear every week

"It worked for months, then just stopped." Almost always the physical layer. A connector that was never fully locked has been losing its grip one bump at a time since install day. Press both plugs until they click, then run the reset. Most of these calls end right there.

"The car suddenly feels slower than stock." Almost always a mode change nobody remembers making. Another driver or a stray tap can land the unit in eco, which relaxes the pedal mapping by design. ShiftPower cannot remove engine power in any mode, just as it cannot add any; only the pedal mapping changes. Check the app before checking anything under the dash.

"The app found it last week, but not today." A stale connection on the phone side. An app that was minimized instead of closed can hang onto a dead session. Swipe it fully away, reset the unit until the light turns pink, and reconnect clean before suspecting hardware.

The light is blinking or behaving strangely

Light patterns differ by ShiftPower model, so we are not going to publish one universal decoder here; a chart written for a different model can turn a two minute fix into a wasted evening. Your product manual documents what the light on your specific unit means, and the manual is linked from your product page and from our manuals page.

No matter the pattern, reseat both connectors at the pedal until each one locks, then run the full reset described below. If the light keeps doing something the manual does not explain, email us with your model number and a short description of the pattern, and we will identify it for you.

The app will not connect or keeps dropping

App connection complaints are usually a phone side problem, and the fix order matters. Work through it like this.

  1. Close the app completely. Not minimized, closed. Swipe it out of your recent apps, then reopen and try again; the app needs a clean start after any failed attempt.
  2. Reset the ShiftPower unit. Hold the button for about 30 seconds until the light turns pink, close the app completely one more time, then reconnect.
  3. Try a different device. Borrow a second phone or grab a tablet and attempt the same connection. This is the step that tells you where the problem lives, because two phones and a tablet share almost nothing: different operating systems, different radios, different app installs.

Here is the honest part: if the app cannot find the unit from all of those devices, the one thing they share is the ShiftPower unit itself. That pattern indicates a hardware issue, so stop troubleshooting and contact us, because it is covered under warranty.

Your vehicle is not listed in the app

This one worries people far more than it should. The vehicle selection in the app is a label, nothing more. It exists to classify vehicles for owners who run ShiftPower in more than one car, and it has no effect on driving performance, settings, or programming. If your exact model has not been added to the app database yet, select any similar vehicle as a placeholder and drive on. The unit performs identically either way.

The app is showing Portuguese

If your app shows Portuguese, you are most likely running the native developer build rather than the official release. The version installed from the Apple App Store or Google Play is in English by default. There is no language toggle inside the app, so do not hunt through menus looking for one. Delete the app you have, install the official version from your app store, and reconnect.

The full reset, step by step

The reset is the documented cure for most stubborn ShiftPower behavior because it returns the unit to a known state and forces the next app connection to start clean. It takes under a minute.

  1. Press and hold the button on the unit for about 30 seconds.
  2. Release when the light turns pink.
  3. Close the app completely, swiping it out of your recent apps.
  4. Reopen the app and reconnect.

After the reset, reselect your preferred mode and take a short drive. If the same symptom returns immediately after a clean reset and a confirmed connector lock at the pedal, it is time to get us involved.

When to contact us

Email us any time a checklist above dead ends, and specifically when the unit fails to connect across multiple devices or a symptom survives the full reset. If your ShiftPower is within its 3 year warranty and the issue cannot be resolved remotely, email us through the contact page or write to info@beatsonicusa.com to start a warranty claim and receive an RMA number. Keep in mind warranty coverage applies to units bought new from Beat-Sonic USA or an authorized dealer.

Include your model number, your vehicle, what the light is doing, and which steps you already tried. That usually gets you a resolution in one reply instead of three. And if the time under your dash gave you the upgrade itch, our plug and play amplifiers and wireless CarPlay kits follow the same no cutting philosophy as ShiftPower.

Frequently asked questions

Does unplugging ShiftPower return my car to stock?

Yes. ShiftPower connects inline at the accelerator pedal connector, so removing it and plugging the factory connector back together returns the vehicle to exactly how it left the factory. That reversibility is also a useful diagnostic: if a symptom persists with ShiftPower unplugged, the cause is elsewhere in the vehicle.

Will ShiftPower throw a check engine light?

ShiftPower works with the accelerator pedal signal through OEM style connectors, and it is designed to be an invisible passenger to the rest of the vehicle. If a warning ever appears, first confirm both connectors at the pedal are fully locked, since a partial connection is the usual suspect. Unplugging the unit and reconnecting the factory plug restores stock behavior, which makes it easy to confirm whether the light had anything to do with the unit at all.

How long is the ShiftPower warranty?

ShiftPower carries a 3 year warranty. If a covered issue cannot be resolved remotely, email info@beatsonicusa.com to start a claim and obtain an RMA number. Coverage applies to units purchased new from Beat-Sonic USA or an authorized dealer.

I selected the wrong vehicle in the app. Did I hurt anything?

No. The vehicle selection only labels and classifies vehicles for owners with multiple cars. It has no effect on performance, settings, or programming, so a wrong or placeholder selection changes nothing about how the unit drives.

My car feels slower in eco mode. Is the unit faulty?

No, that is eco mode working as intended. It softens the pedal mapping, which helps improve fuel economy for many drivers, and no throttle controller adds engine power in any mode. If you want a livelier feel, switch to one of the sportier modes in the app and compare on the same stretch of road.

Want a technician to look it over?

Bring your vehicle to our La Mirada, CA facility and we will diagnose the unit in person. Visits are by appointment, and most wrap up the same day they are booked, so you are not leaving the car with us for a week.
