Stereo Replacement and Double DIN Buying Guide: Toyota and Lexus

If you own a 1998-2012 Toyota or Lexus with JBL, Lexus Premium Sound or Mark Levinson audio, you have probably already discovered the problem: the generic dash kit and harness you were sold does not actually work in your car. That is not a defect in the kit. It is a consequence of how these cars were wired. This page explains what is different about an amplified Toyota or Lexus, how to read our part numbers, and which adapter or kit belongs in your car.

Why these cars need a special adapter

Here is the honest part most listings skip. On a Toyota or Lexus with a factory amplified system, whether that is JBL, Lexus Premium Sound or Mark Levinson, the head unit is not driving your speakers. The factory amplifier is, from somewhere else in the car.

So when you pull the factory radio and plug in a generic harness, one of two things happens. Either the amplifier never gets a turn-on signal and you get silence, or it gets fed a signal it was never designed to receive. Neither outcome is what you had in mind on a Saturday morning with the dash apart.

Beat-Sonic adapters plug into the factory 20-pin connector and keep the factory amplifier in the chain. Your new head unit talks to the adapter, the adapter talks to the amplifier, and the amplifier keeps driving the speakers exactly as Toyota or Lexus intended. Nothing gets spliced, no factory wire gets cut, and the whole thing comes back out if you want the car stock again. On several models the adapter also holds onto what was built into the same stack as the radio, such as climate control, the factory navigation screen or the backup camera.

A pattern you will notice in the part numbers

Across this lineup the prefix usually signals what the part assumes about your car.

• SLX and SLA parts are for cars without factory navigation. The SLX-82AAD, SLX-140L, SLX-81A, SLX-82A, SLA-31FB, SLA-100/82AAD and SLA-101 all follow this pattern.
• MVA and MVX parts are for cars with factory navigation. The MVA-81, MVA-23L, MVA-24L, MVA-12L, MVA-13L and MVX-140L all fit that description.
• Several of the nav parts go further and retain the factory navigation screen while adding a video input to it. The MVX-140L and MVA-23L both do this.
• Some parts are adapter only, with no dash kit and no face panel. The SLX-82AAD is the clearest example. Others are complete kits with the interface adapter plus a face panel, mounting brackets and side panels, like the SLA-100/82AAD and the SLA-101.

Treat that as the pattern across the lineup, not as a rule you can order from. The prefix narrows your search, it does not confirm fitment, and reasoning from the letters alone will eventually put the wrong box on your porch. Confirm the specific part on its product page before you buy.

The four questions that pick your part

Every fitment conversation we have on the phone comes down to the same four answers. Get them right and the part chooses itself.

1. Year and model. Not the generation, the model year. Several of these platforms changed mid-run.
2. Factory navigation, yes or no. This is the single most common thing people get wrong. A car with a nav screen in the dash needs a different part than the same car without one.
3. Factory premium audio, and which one. JBL, Lexus Premium Sound, Mark Levinson, or none. On the GX 470 that answer changes the part twice.
4. Single DIN or double DIN head unit. Most of these kits are double DIN, but not all. The MVA-81 is single DIN only, and buying a tall head unit for a GX 470 with factory nav is a disappointing way to find that out.

The adapter that covers the most cars: SLX-82AAD

The SLX-82AAD is the workhorse of this catalog. It covers select 2001-2011 Toyota and Lexus models with JBL, Lexus Premium or Mark Levinson audio, retains the factory amplifier, and uses the 20-pin connector. It is an adapter only, so there is no dash kit in the box. If your install also needs a face panel or brackets, look at one of the complete kits further down this page.

Read the Lexus list carefully. Every Lexus entry above is for a car without factory navigation. If your Lexus has a nav screen, you are in a different part number, most likely one of the MVA or MVX kits below.

Lexus kits by model family

Lexus IS

The second-generation IS splits cleanly on navigation. The MVX-140L fits the 2006-2009 IS 250, IS 350 and IS-F with factory navigation. It retains the factory amplifier, the factory speakers, the factory navigation screen, the climate control and the backup camera, and it adds a video input to the factory screen. Made in Japan, double DIN, automatic transmission only. State the limit plainly, because it comes up weekly: the MVX-140L is not compatible with 2010 and newer IS models, because the infotainment system changed significantly with the 2010 refresh. That is not a fitment guess, it is a different system.

Without factory navigation, the SLX-140L covers the 2006-2012 IS 250, IS 350, IS-F and IS C, retaining the factory amplifier, the factory speakers and the climate control. Also made in Japan, also double DIN, also automatic transmission only. If your IS is a manual, neither of these is your part.

Lexus GX 470

The GX 470 is the model where all four questions matter at once. With factory navigation, the part is the MVA-81, covering 2003-2009 and retaining the factory amplifier, the climate control and the factory navigation. Two things to know before you buy a head unit: the MVA-81 is single DIN only, and the audio button on the center fascia is disabled after installation. It uses the 20-pin connector and includes the interface adapter plus 2 side panels.

Without navigation and without Mark Levinson, the part is the SLX-81A, also 2003-2009, also retaining the factory amplifier, also 20-pin, also with the interface adapter and 2 side panels. A GX 470 with Mark Levinson and no navigation is covered by the SLX-82AAD instead.

Lexus LS 430

The MVA-23L fits the 2001-2003 LS 430 with factory navigation. It is double DIN, it retains factory navigation and screen functions, and it adds a video input to the factory nav screen that works while parked with the parking brake engaged. Gray trim, made in Japan, using 6-pin and 20-pin connectors, and the box includes a face panel, interface adapter, 2 brackets, antenna cable and video input adapter.

Three honest notes. It is not compatible with models equipped with the IN-CAR Portable Phone System. The steering wheel Mode button is deactivated after install. And the steering wheel volume button adjusts gain on the factory amplifier rather than the head unit, which is different behavior than you are used to. For the 2004-2006 LS 430 with factory nav, the part is the MVA-24L. Either way, the SLA-23ANT antenna adapter cable covers the 2001-2006 LS 430 and is worth adding to the same order.

Lexus RX

The SLX-82A fits the 2004-2009 RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h without factory navigation and with Mark Levinson or Lexus Premium Sound. It is double DIN, it retains the factory amplifier, and it includes a face panel, interface adapter and 2 brackets. Steering wheel controls need a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 with a Metra 70-8114.

Lexus SC 430 and GS

The SC 430 with factory navigation splits by year: the MVA-12L for 2002-2004 and the MVA-13L for 2005-2009. On the earlier GS, the SLA-31FB is the dash kit for the 1998-2005 GS 300, GS 400 and GS 430 without navigation.

Toyota kits, Scion kits and JDM imports

Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 470

The 100-series trucks get their own parts. The SLA-100/82AAD is a complete kit for the 1998-2002 Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 470 with Mark Levinson and without factory navigation. You get the interface adapter, a face panel and 2 mounting brackets, it is double DIN, it uses the 20-pin connector, and it retains the Mark Levinson amplifier.

The limitation is worth stating before you order rather than after. The interface adapter for Nakamichi and Lexus Premium Sound systems is not available in the USA due to incompatibility, so this kit is for Mark Levinson trucks only. If your 100-series has Nakamichi, we do not have a part for you, and we would rather say so now.

If you only need the dash hardware for those same trucks, the SLA-100R is the double DIN dash kit for the 1998-2002 Land Cruiser and LX 470. For the next generation, the SLA-101 covers the 2003-2007 Land Cruiser without factory navigation as a complete kit with the interface adapter, a face panel, 2 side panels and 2 mounting brackets. It is double DIN and it retains the factory amplifier.

Toyota and Scion without a factory amplifier

Not every car in this era had a premium system, and if yours did not, the job gets much simpler and much cheaper. The BH1 puts both halves of the install in one box: a plug and play wiring harness on the OEM 10-pin and 6-pin connectors, plus a double DIN dash kit. Made in Japan, for select Toyota and Scion models without a factory amplifier.

JDM imports

Some of you brought the car over rather than buying it at a dealer, and the Japanese-market parts are real products with real fitment. For the Toyota Aristo JZS161 with factory navigation, the part is the MVA-31.

For the 1999-2007 Toyota S170 Crown, the split is by sound system and by navigation. With Super Live Sound, the MVX-43B covers cars with navigation and the SLX-43A covers cars without. With Royal Sound, the MVX-43BR is the with-nav part. For an S170 Crown without navigation, the SLX-43A covers the Super Live Sound system and the SLX-43AR is the other without-nav adapter, so confirm which on the product page.

Steering wheel controls, the number one post-install surprise

This is the thing people find out at the end instead of the beginning. Retaining your factory steering wheel audio buttons generally requires a separate interface. It is not built into these adapters, and no amount of correct wiring on the 20-pin connector will bring those buttons back on its own. Beat-Sonic offers the Metra Axxess ASWC-1 as an add-on option on the relevant product pages, so it goes in the same order as the adapter. The SLX-81A and SLX-82A pages specify the ASWC-1 together with a Metra 70-8114.

Skip it and the install will otherwise go perfectly. You will button the dash back up, back out of the garage, reach for the volume rocker on the wheel out of ten years of habit, and nothing will happen. Add it now.

When not to replace the stereo

This is the section that will cost us a few sales, and we would rather write it than not.

If your car is newer and what you actually want is CarPlay, replacing the head unit is usually the wrong move. A wireless CarPlay interface keeps the factory screen, the steering wheel controls, the microphone and the backup camera, and it reverses cleanly. On a car you plan to resell, a stock-looking dash is worth real money. And if your complaint is not that the system looks dated but that it sounds weak, a new head unit will not fix that either. Thinness on a freeway merge, where two more clicks of volume get you louder without getting fuller, is an amplifier problem.
