Lexus GX460 Rear View Mirror Camera: Digital Mirror Preview

If cargo, passengers or a third row keep blocking your view out the back, a GX460 rear view mirror camera fixes the problem at the source. Our new Digital Rearview E-Mirror for the Lexus GX 460 replaces the factory mirror with a wide display fed by a dedicated rear camera, and in this video our team installs one and takes it for a drive.

Quick answer: the E-Mirror is built for the 2010 to 2023 Lexus GX 460. It works as a normal reflective mirror until you press a button, then switches to a live 60 frames per second camera view that ignores whatever is stacked in the cargo area. It is not on sale yet. The Problem With the GX460's Factory Mirror

The GX 460 is a big, boxy SUV, and the factory mirror only shows what fits through the rear glass. Fold up the third row, load the back for a trip, or put tall passengers in the second row, and most of that view disappears. Even with an empty cabin, the pillars and headrests chop the picture into small pieces.

A camera mounted at the rear sees past all of it. That is the whole idea behind a digital mirror: move the viewpoint from the driver's seat to the back of the truck, then put the picture where your eyes already go.

What the Digital Rearview Mirror Does

Two modes, one button

In standard mode it is an ordinary reflective mirror. Press the button and it switches to the digital camera view. If the display is ever off, the reflective mirror is still there, so you never lose rear visibility.

A screen built for daylight and night

The display is a 9.2 inch IPS panel at 1920 x 384, rated at 5,000 cd/m² so it stays readable in direct sun and dims for night driving. In the night portion of the video, oncoming headlights do not wash out the image, and you can pick out each pair of lights behind you.

Smooth motion

The camera sends a 60 frames per second digital LVDS signal, the same type of connection factory digital mirrors use. The product page specifies a camera to screen delay of 55ms or less, and the display comes on within a second of power-up.

On-mirror controls and a garage door opener

Buttons along the bottom of the mirror let you nudge the camera view up, down, left and right, zoom in and out, and change brightness, with more settings in the menu. A 3-button garage door opener is built into the mirror, so the remote stays where your hand already reaches.

Built to last

The camera uses an automotive-grade Sony IMX sensor and is IP69K rated against water and dust. The mirror carries a 3 year limited warranty from Beat-Sonic USA.

One thing it does not do: record. This model is display only, with no dash cam or DVR function.

What Our Test Drive Showed

On the road, the difference is obvious within a few seconds. With the reflective view, the cabin itself blocks part of the picture. Flip to the camera and the lanes on both sides open up, including cars sitting in the zones your normal mirror misses. In one stretch of the video there is a car on the left that the factory view simply does not show. One press later, it is right there.

How the Install Works

The mirror itself goes on quickly. The factory mirror comes off by removing one screw at the bottom and sliding it up, and the E-Mirror mounts in the same spot on a vehicle-specific bracket.

The wiring takes more time. There are two cables:

  • Power: our team routed it through the headliner, down the A-pillar and to the fuse box.
  • Rear camera: it runs across the headliner to the back of the truck, behind interior panels, and through a grommet to the camera position.

Doing this properly means removing some trim. The panels in the video come off with screws, clips and 10mm bolts. Tools used were panel removal tools, a 10mm socket and clip removal tools.

Camera angle and tinted glass

The kit includes a plastic angle bracket for the rear camera. Our team did not pick the most aggressive angle, but the one just below it, and you can fine-tune the view in the mirror settings as well. Because this truck's rear glass is tinted, our team also cut a small opening in the tint so the camera looks through clear glass.

Our honest install advice

The video calls the install easy, and for a confident DIYer the steps are not complicated. The product page still recommends a qualified 12-volt technician, and here is why. The camera uses a high-speed digital cable that must not be pinched, crushed or sharply bent. Coil any extra in a loose loop instead of folding it, confirm a stable power source with a multimeter before connecting, and check the camera angle on the display before the final mount.
