Lexus Camera Settings: Program the Front Camera Button

Your Lexus camera setup is only half finished once the hardware is bolted in. The button that came with the Beat-Sonic CS11A front camera interface has two settings buried behind a press and hold sequence, and almost nobody programs them. We installed a Beat-Sonic CS11A front camera interface on a 2022 Lexus ES this week, and the part owners keep asking about is not the wiring. It is how that little green button behaves once the car is back together.

Short answer: the CS11A button cycles front camera, then backup camera, then back to your factory Lexus screen. The view times out after 15 seconds by default, and you can change that to a shorter or longer window or turn the timer off entirely. The second press that calls up the backup camera works at any speed, including on the freeway, and you can disable that press if you do not want it.

What the CS11A Button Actually Controls

The CS11A is a camera selector. It sits between your factory head unit and the cameras, and it decides what the factory screen shows. On the ES we paired it with the BCAM13 universal front camera, one of several options in our camera solutions collection, mounted low on the front bumper so it looks straight down at the end of the bumper.

Press the button once and the factory screen switches to the front camera. Press it again and you get the reverse camera. Press it a third time and you are back on whatever you were looking at before, whether that was audio, navigation, or the home screen. Nothing about the dash looks different. There is no extra display stuck to the windshield and no aftermarket head unit.

The three states in order

  • Press one: front bumper camera view
  • Press two: factory reverse camera view
  • Press three: back to the native Lexus screen

The LED in the button tells you the system has power. Once the car is in accessory or running, that green ring should be lit. If it is dark, the harness behind the screen is the first thing to check.

Programming the Front Camera Timeout

Out of the box the camera view holds for 15 seconds and then drops you back to the factory screen. That is a reasonable default for pulling into a parking space. It is not always what you want. Backing into a tight garage or creeping up on a wheel stop, a longer window is easier. On a quick curb check, a shorter one gets out of your way faster.

How to enter programming mode

  1. Turn the vehicle off.
  2. Press and hold the camera button. Keep your finger clear of the LED so you can see it.
  3. Turn the car on while still holding the button.
  4. Watch for the LED to start flashing, then let go.

How to read and change the timer

You are now in the timer setting. Count the flashes. Three flashes is the 15 second default. Each press moves you to the next option, so four flashes is a 20 second hold and five flashes disables the timer so the camera view stays up until you press the button again. Fewer flashes give you the shorter windows. Once the flash count matches the setting you want, press and hold the button. A rapid blink confirms the setting saved.

That is the whole procedure. No app, no scan tool, no trip back to the shop. If you want to change your mind next week, run it again.

Turning the Backup Camera View On or Off

The second setting is the one people underestimate. By default, a second press of the button brings up your factory reverse camera, and it does that whether you are parked, rolling through a lot, or moving at highway speed. If you have ever wanted to glance at what is behind a trailer or check a load in the bed while driving, this is the feature. Owners who search for how to wire a backup camera to stay on are usually trying to build this by hand. The CS11A does it as a setting.

Some drivers would rather not have it. To change it, enter the setup sequence the same way, but instead of releasing at the first flash, keep holding until the LED goes solid, then let go. You are now on the backup camera setting. Two flashes means the second press shows the reverse camera, which is the default. One flash turns that function off, so the button only calls up the front camera. Press and hold to save, wait for the rapid blink, and you are done.

Nothing about this changes your factory reverse behavior. Shift into reverse and the Lexus system still does exactly what it always did.

Where the Hardware Lives on a 2022 ES

The ES grille is shaped differently from the RC and the Sienna, so the camera mounting changed. We normally tuck the camera up under the plastic grille trim and flip it upside down. This owner wanted to keep the front license plate, so the camera went on the lower edge instead, aimed to show the end of the bumper. The camera lead was tied to the crash beam behind the plate so no wire dangles in view.

Inside, the selector module hides in the cavity behind the hazard light panel. The button sits low on the dash where your right hand naturally falls. Everything connects through the black plug behind the factory screen, which is why this is an afternoon job rather than a wiring project. If you want the full teardown, our writeup on the CS11A and BCAM13 install on a Lexus RC walks through panel removal and routing step by step.

One thing to double check

The 28 pin connector on the CS11A harness has fine pins that mate against the factory side. Push it in straight and listen for the click. A pin that gets bent or pushed sideways can cost you the backup camera or throw an error on the screen. It looks seated well before it actually is.

Three exclusions are worth knowing before you order. GX 460 models with the 360 degree birds eye view camera are not compatible. NX 200t models with Intelligent Clearance Sonar or Intuitive Parking Assist are not compatible. UX 200 and UX 250 models with Parking Support and/or Parking Support Brake systems are not compatible. If you are not sure which package your car left the factory with, email us with your year, model and trim before you order.

Because none of this cuts a factory wire, the whole kit comes back out if you sell the car. Owners who like keeping things reversible often pair it with our dash cam power adapter for Lexus and Toyota, which follows the same plug and play logic. You can see what else installs this way in our Lexus CarPlay and Android Auto collection and in new products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the backup camera while driving with the CS11A?

Yes. Two presses of the button bring up the factory reverse camera at any speed, including highway speeds. The view drops back to your normal screen when the timer runs out or when you press the button again.

How long does the front camera view stay on?

Fifteen seconds by default. You can shorten it, extend it to 20 seconds, or disable the timer so it stays up until you press the button again.

How do I get into CS11A programming mode?

Press and hold the camera button, turn the car on while holding it, and release once the LED starts flashing. Hold past the flashing until the LED goes solid to reach the backup camera setting instead.

Do I lose any factory features?

No. The factory screen, factory reverse camera and factory controls all keep working. The CS11A adds a view rather than replacing one, and nothing is cut or spliced.

Do I need a separate camera, or is one included?

The CS11A is the interface. It needs a front camera to display. We used the BCAM13 universal front camera on this ES, and it ships with the extension, power supply, adhesive and a prep wipe.
