Honda Audio Upgrade Guide: Plug and Play Amplifier Kits

A Honda sound system upgrade does not require replacing the radio your car was built around. Honda's factory head units are deeply integrated, and the base audio behind them is the real weak point: thin, quiet, and quick to distort. Why a Honda sound system upgrade starts at the amplifier

Most Honda trims ship with a head unit that does a lot and an audio section that does very little. The screen handles CarPlay, cameras, and settings well, but the signal it sends to the speakers is low powered and heavily shaped. Push the volume and the sound falls apart before it fills the cabin.

You already know the symptoms if you drive one. The podcast that sounds fine at a stoplight vanishes under road noise at 70 mph, so you turn it up and the voices turn harsh instead of louder. Music in an Accord or CR-V on the freeway lives in a narrow band between too quiet and too strained. Rear passengers get the worst of it, because the starved rear speakers give up first. None of that is a speaker problem. It is a power problem.

Swapping the radio throws away the integration Honda got right and usually costs you factory features. Our approach is the opposite: keep the head unit, keep every control, and add clean amplification behind it. The ENA-3H3 amplifier kit covers 2016-2026 Honda models and is the heart of a modern Honda audio upgrade. It installs behind the factory radio with its included plug and play harness, amplifies the factory signal, and adds a dedicated subwoofer output so bass is an option instead of a rebuild.

The install follows a simple pattern. The trim around the radio comes off, the radio slides out far enough to reach its connectors, the ENA-3H3 harness plugs in between the radio and the factory wiring, and the compact amplifier module tucks in behind the dash. Because the amplifier builds on the factory signal, the factory radio has to be in full working order; the kit enhances a healthy system and cannot revive a failing one.

A few details worth knowing before install day. The ENA-3H3 has an autosense mode: set to autosense, the amplifier powers up on its own once it detects an audio signal from the factory radio, so there is no switch to remember. A side effect worth expecting is that in autosense mode the indicator light waits for music, so it comes on once audio is actually playing rather than the instant the key turns; that is normal behavior, not a fault. The ENA-3H3 is also the one kit in our Encore Alpha line with a separate ground cable, and that cable must be secured to clean bare metal. Every other ENA kit builds the ground into the harness, so if you have installed one of those before, treat the ground step here with extra care. A solid ground is the difference between a clean install and a head scratcher.

What changes day to day? The system stops collapsing at highway speed. Vocals sit forward where they belong, the volume knob gains usable range instead of a cliff between quiet and harsh, and the factory speakers reveal they were never as bad as they seemed, just underfed. Because the factory head unit stays in charge, CarPlay, the cameras, the steering wheel buttons, and every setting keep working exactly as before. Nothing in the cabin looks different. Everything sounds different.

And the honest limits: the ENA-3H3 is an Encore Alpha kit, so there is no DSP and no app based tuning, just clean power delivered through the factory system. It does not add speakers or channels, though it will drive quality aftermarket speakers properly if you upgrade them later. Honda builds a lot of different cars in a 2016-2026 window, so confirm your exact model and year against the fitment list on the product page before you order. ENA-3H1: coverage for earlier Hondas

Driving something older? The ENA-3H1 amplifier kit brings the same idea to earlier Honda models: plug and play amplification through the factory system, with a subwoofer output included. The concept is identical to the ENA-3H3, just matched to the connectors Honda used in those years, and the day to day result is the same story: more headroom, more detail, and a factory system that finally keeps up with the road noise of a car with some miles on it.

A Honda specific note: active noise cancellation

Many late model Hondas run active noise cancellation through the audio system, using the cabin speakers to counter engine drone. Because an amplifier changes the audio chain those signals travel through, ANC deserves a mention in any honest Honda audio guide.

Our advice from installs is simple: complete the amplifier install and test the car first. Most cars sound great and need nothing more. Add a subwoofer off the ENA-3 output

Both Honda kits are ENA-3 series, which means both include a dedicated subwoofer output. On the ENA-3H3 that comes with a remote turn-on lead to switch a powered subwoofer on with the car, and the RCA outputs are full range by default, so you set the low pass crossover on the subwoofer's own amplifier where it belongs. There is no onboard crossover or EQ shaping that signal, which is by design: the sub you choose decides how the bass behaves.

In practice this makes adding bass to a Honda genuinely easy. A compact powered sub under a seat, in a corner of an Accord trunk, or against the cargo wall of a CR-V connects to the kit, not to the factory wiring, and fills in everything the factory system leaves out below the midbass. The door speakers relax once they stop faking low end, so the whole system sounds cleaner, not just deeper.

One limit to respect: the subwoofer output is a line level preamp signal, so it cannot power a passive, unamplified subwoofer on its own. Where to start on your Honda

From shop experience: start with the amplifier, and deaden the front doors in the same session if the budget allows, since the panels only need to come off once. Live with that combination for a few weeks before deciding anything else. Properly powered, the factory speakers surprise most owners, and the urge to replace them often fades.

Add the powered subwoofer when you find yourself wanting the low end the cabin cannot produce; the output on the kit will already be waiting, so it is a connection, not a redo.
