SAVE Your Infotainment system Why Preparation Steps Matter Before Installing

Whether you're upgrading your audio system, adding a wireless interface, or installing any other car electronics, taking the proper preparation steps before you begin is absolutely critical. Skipping these steps may seem like a time-saver, but the consequences can be costly — and in some cases, irreversible.

The Risk: Damaging Your Factory Infotainment Logic Board

One of the most common and expensive mistakes made during car electronics installations is failing to properly power down the vehicle's electrical system beforehand. This oversight can result in damage to your factory infotainment logic board — a repair that can cost $800 or more, and a full replacement that can run into the thousands of dollars.

When the factory infotainment logic board is damaged, you will typically experience:

  • A completely black screen on your infotainment display
  • No audio output from the factory system

In some cases, certain vehicle functions such as climate control and the backup camera may continue to operate normally, which can make the issue difficult to diagnose at first. This type of damage has been observed in Lexus and Toyota vehicles, and may affect other makes and models as well.

How to Prevent Logic Board Damage

The good news is that this type of damage is entirely preventable. By following the proper preparation steps before beginning any car electronics installation, you can protect your vehicle's sensitive components from accidental short circuits and electrical damage.

Step 1: Switch Off the Headlight Dimmer and Ignition

Before disconnecting the battery, make sure to:

  • Switch the headlight dimmer to the OFF position
  • Turn the ignition to the OFF position

Step 2: Wait the Prescribed Duration

After switching everything off, you must wait the appropriate amount of time before disconnecting the battery. The required wait time depends on whether your vehicle is enrolled in a Safety Connect system:

Vehicle Condition Wait Time
Vehicle enrolled in Safety Connect system 6 minutes
Vehicle not enrolled in Safety Connect system 1 minute

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery Negative (−) Terminal

Always disconnect the battery negative (−) terminal before starting any installation. This is the most important step to prevent component and wire damage caused by accidental short circuits.

Important Note: What Gets Reset When You Disconnect the Battery

Please be aware that disconnecting the battery will clear certain stored settings and data in your vehicle, including:

  • Clock settings
  • Radio and audio system memory
  • Seat memory positions
  • Steering column memory positions
  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
  • Other stored vehicle data

We recommend noting down any personalized settings before proceeding so you can restore them after the installation is complete.
