Subaru WRX and Crosstrek Upgrade Guide: Audio and Throttle

A Subaru WRX sound system upgrade competes with a boxer engine, all season tires, and a cabin that was never built for quiet, and the factory base audio loses that fight every day. The Crosstrek has the same problem with more road under it. This guide covers the plug and play amplifier, subwoofer, throttle, deadening, and antenna upgrades we build for both, what each one changes about the daily drive, and the honest fine print, all without cutting a factory wire.

Why the Subaru WRX sound system upgrade starts behind the radio

Subaru got the important things right in these cars: the drivetrain, the seating position, the visibility. The base audio system got a low powered signal and speakers that strain the moment you try to play over highway noise. In a WRX the exhaust note wins. In a Crosstrek the tire roar does.

Play it out over a real week of ownership. The WRX on a freeway commute settles into a boxer drone that eats the midrange, so you turn the music up, and by the time it clears the drone it is already distorting. The Crosstrek loaded with camping gear and a dog in the cargo area adds gravel spray and all terrain hum to the mix, and the rear speakers give up first. Owners blame the speakers. Nine times out of ten the speakers are merely starved.

Replacing the head unit is the wrong fix here. The factory unit ties into cameras and controls, and an aftermarket dash rarely looks at home in a Subaru interior. ENA-3S1: the amp kit for the 2016-2026 WRX and Crosstrek

The ENA-3S1 amplifier kit is our Subaru platform amplifier, and it is best known for the GR86 and BRZ. It is not exclusive to them. The same kit is the audio upgrade path for the 2016-2026 WRX and the 2016-2019 and 2022-2026 Crosstrek, with plug and play installation behind the factory radio and a dedicated subwoofer output built in.

The install is a known quantity. The trim around the radio comes off, the radio comes out far enough to reach its connectors, the ENA-3S1 harness plugs in between the radio and the factory wiring, and the amplifier module tucks in behind the dash. For the WRX, we documented a complete ENA-3S1 amplifier install on a 2023 Subaru WRX, panels off and step by step. Read it before you order and there will be no surprises on install day. What changes afterward is the part owners describe best. The volume knob stops being a compromise between inaudible and harsh. Detail that used to exist only in the driveway survives at 75 mph, and the system holds together over the exact drone that used to bury it. Since the factory head unit stays in charge, the screen, the steering wheel controls, and the camera all carry on untouched. The honest limits are just as simple: the ENA-3S1 is an Encore Alpha kit with no DSP and no app tuning, it does not add speakers, and it needs a factory radio in full working order, because it strengthens the factory signal rather than replacing it.

One fitment detail decides your configuration, and it splits by year. On the newer cars, a 2022-2026 WRX or a 2022-2026 Crosstrek without Harman Kardon audio needs the VAZ-A02K compatibility module along with the amp, and the ENA-3S1 product page has a checkout selection for exactly this. Choose the without Harman Kardon option and the module ships with your kit. The 2016-2021 WRX and the 2016-2019 Crosstrek are each listed on their own and take the amp without that module, as do the GR86 and BRZ. If you ordered the wrong configuration, contact us before install day and we will sort it out.

One more note from the bench: the amp will drive quality aftermarket speakers later if you upgrade them. If you do run aftermarket speakers and hear static or distortion afterward, adding bass blockers to the door speakers or tweeters is the fix that has resolved it for previous Subaru customers, so try that before assuming anything is broken.

Harman Kardon equipped Subarus: what changes

Some Subaru trims carry the factory Harman Kardon system, and the rules shift slightly there. The good news is simple: the ENA-3S1 is plug and play on Harman Kardon equipped Subarus with no extra harnesses needed. The amplifier upgrade itself works exactly as it does on base audio cars.

The nuance shows up when you add a subwoofer. On Harman Kardon cars, the ENA-3S1 subwoofer output does not follow the factory volume knob, so an added powered sub plays at its own constant level whether the radio is loud or turned down. The working answer is the bass control knob on the powered subwoofer itself: set it once to taste, or mount the remote knob within reach and ride it like a second volume control. Plenty of owners are perfectly happy with that arrangement, but you should know about it before you buy, not after. We would rather set expectations now than surprise you in the driveway.

Add a subwoofer off the ENA-3 output

Neither the WRX nor the Crosstrek has meaningful factory bass, and both have easy homes for a compact powered subwoofer: behind the seats in the sedan, under the cargo floor or against a trunk wall in the Crosstrek. The ENA-3S1's dedicated subwoofer output feeds a powered sub without touching a single speaker wire, and the kit's remote turn-on lead wakes the sub with the ignition, so there is no wire to fish from the radio or fuse box.

On a base audio car the sub volume tracks the factory radio normally, so it behaves like it came with the car: turn the music down and the bass follows. The output is a line level preamp signal, which sets one clear limit: it cannot power a passive, unamplified subwoofer on its own. You need a powered sub with a built-in amplifier, or a passive sub with its own separate amp, and the low pass crossover gets set on that amplifier where it belongs. Sound deadening and the shark fin antenna

Subarus are honest cars with thin panels, and both the WRX and Crosstrek let in more road noise than their stereos can politely cover. Sound deadening material adds mass to the doors and panels, damps the resonance, and cuts road roar, which means you hear more music at less volume and long drives stop wearing you down.
