Shark Fin Antenna Buying Guide: Functional Fins for Toyota, Scion and Subaru

A shark fin antenna is the rare upgrade where two parts that look identical in a photograph do completely different jobs. One is an antenna. The other is a plastic shell with tape on the bottom. Every fin Beat-Sonic sells is the first kind, and almost every return here traces back to one of three things a buyer did not check before ordering.

Functional versus cosmetic, and why it is the whole decision

Search for a shark fin antenna and most of what comes back is a twenty dollar cosmetic fin: a molded plastic shell glued over the hole where your factory mast used to live. Inside there is nothing. No element, no coil, no cable. It is body trim shaped like an antenna.

Here is what happens next. You unscrew the factory mast, stick the shell down, and the first time you leave town the FM station you have listened to for ten years turns to hiss twenty miles earlier than it used to. Satellite drops under overpasses. HD Radio stops locking. The fin looks right in the driveway and your radio is worse everywhere else.

Every fin on this page is functional. Each one replaces the factory rear roof antenna and keeps AM, FM, HD Radio and Satellite Radio working, because there is a real antenna inside the housing rather than air. That is what the price difference over a stick-on shell buys. All of them are made in Japan, mount with 3M tape, install in minutes with no drilling, and are fully reversible.

If reception does not matter to you, buy the cheap shell with your eyes open. If you listen to the radio, buy an antenna.

The three questions that decide your part

Nine parts sounds like a lot until you answer three questions.

1. What is your vehicle and year

Several of these fins are vehicle-shaped. The FDX3 is contoured to the Prius roofline so it follows the curve of the roof instead of perching on it, the FDX3T replaces the factory rear roof stubby antenna on 2010 and newer Toyota models, and the Scion and Subaru FDX4 is cut for that group of cars.

2. What size is your factory antenna base

This is the number one mis-order in the category, and it takes thirty seconds to avoid. Measure your factory antenna base before you order. Not the mast, the base it screws into. The FDX4 universal listing says so explicitly, and the Prius split below exists entirely because two identical-looking cars can leave the factory with different base sizes. 3. Do you have factory satellite radio

This is the question almost nobody thinks to ask, and it is the one that quietly rules parts out. Cars with factory satellite radio often use a larger antenna base. That is what makes the FDX4 Prius small base part and the FDX4 Scion and Subaru part incompatible with certain cars, even when the model and year look like a match. If your car has factory satellite radio, assume the large base until you measure otherwise.

The Prius family, the most confused set in the catalogue

More Prius owners buy shark fins than anyone else, and the Prius is where base size does the most damage. Three parts, not interchangeable.

FDX3: 2004-2015 Prius, large antenna base

The FDX3 fits the 2004-2015 Toyota Prius, contoured to the Prius roofline for a factory-flush fit, and it arrives pre-painted and color matched with OEM paint, so there is no body shop step and no approximate color. The line to remember: the FDX3 is the large antenna base part. Large base, or factory satellite radio, and this is your fin.

FDX4 Prius: 2004-2015 Prius, small antenna base only

The FDX4 Prius small base fits the same 2004-2015 years, but only cars with the SMALL factory antenna base. It is not compatible with a large antenna base, and not with a Prius that has factory satellite radio, because those cars use the larger base. If either describes your car, the correct part is the FDX3.

Said the other way around, so it cannot be misread: small base Prius, order the FDX4 Prius. Large base Prius, or factory satellite radio, order the FDX3.

FDX3T: 2010 and newer Toyota, including Prius V, Prius C and Prius Plug-in

The FDX3T covers 2010 and newer Toyota models in color matched OEM paint, including the shades used on the Prius, Prius V, Prius C and Prius Plug-in. It is a direct replacement for the factory rear roof stubby antenna, with a helical coil inside, and it connects to the factory base with an M5 or M6 screw. Car wash safe, patent pending, 1 year warranty.

One warning, and it is a real one. On Prius models with a solar panel roof, the fin will overlap the solar panel. That is where the factory antenna sits relative to the panel, not a defect and not something an installer can shim away. Look at your own roof and decide whether that is acceptable before you order.

Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, Impreza and WRX

The FDX4 for Scion and Subaru fits select Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, Impreza and WRX. On a low car with a short factory mast it is one of the more noticeable small changes you can make.

Now the trap, because it splits by country and most owners have never thought about it. The FDX4 is not compatible with the USA-spec Subaru BRZ, or with other Subaru models that have factory satellite radio, because those cars use the larger base. The Canadian-spec BRZ is compatible. Same car on the outside, same badge, different antenna base. The broader-fit options

FDX4 universal

The FDX4 universal comes in five OEM paint color options with a compact profile, noticeably smaller than the FDX3. It is the subtle one. Its listing carries the instruction people skip: measure your factory antenna base before ordering, and email info@beatsonicusa.com if you are unsure what you measured.

FDX5 flat base

The FDX5 fits 2008 and newer Toyota, Scion and other compatible vehicles, with a flat base design for low-profile roof mounting. The caveat is geometry. If your roof antenna sits near a steep curve the rubber base may not sit flush, and a base that does not sit flush does not adhere. FDX9 unpainted

The FDX9 is the universal unpainted fin. It sits lower than the other models and is tested to improve driving stability at higher speeds, so it is the one to look at if you spend real time above freeway speed.

The trade-off is not a footnote. Only the unpainted FDA9N is currently available, so matching the car means paying a local body shop to paint it: a second appointment, a second bill, and a color match that depends on their work rather than ours. If a factory match matters more than the lower profile, buy a pre-painted fin instead.

Accessory and re-install kits

If you remove a fin, the gasket and hardware do not come back off in reusable condition, which is exactly what the re-install accessory kits exist for. You need one if you have taken your fin off, or if you are moving it to another vehicle, the usual case when someone sells a Prius and wants the antenna to follow.

Two kits, not interchangeable. The FDAC2 is for the FDA4 series only. The FDAC7B is for the FDA9 series only, and it holds two gaskets, one with 3M adhesive pre-attached, a screw set and an alcohol cleaning wipe. Order the kit that matches your fin.

Installing it, and living with it

The install is short. Remove the factory mast, clean the mounting area, set the fin on its 3M tape, connect it to the factory base. No drilling, no cutting, fully reversible, and most take minutes rather than an afternoon. Nearly every product we sell has an install video on our YouTube channel.

Two habits matter more than any tool. First, clean the mounting surface properly with isopropyl alcohol before the tape touches the roof, because adhesion is the whole install. Road film and wax are what separate a fin still there in five years from one that lifts at an edge after a winter.

Second, confirm whether your factory base screw is M5 or M6 before you are up on the roof. The FDX3T connects with one or the other, and finding out on a step stool with the mast off is a worse time than checking first.
