Toyota Prius Front Camera: Fix the Low Windshield Blind Spot

A Toyota Prius front camera solves a problem the new Prius design creates: you cannot see the front bumper. The windshield on the current Prius is low and narrow, so the view from the driver's seat stops well ahead of the nose. Pull into a garage or a parking space and you either get out to check, or you find the curb with the lip.

Short answer: the Beat-Sonic CS15A front camera interface plugs in behind the factory screen on 2023 to 2026 Prius models and shows a front camera on the screen you already have. Pair it with the BCAM13 wide angle front camera, because the CS15A is the interface only and the camera is sold separately.

Why You Cannot See the Prius Front Bumper

From the driver's seat of the new Prius you see what is ahead of the car, not what is below it. The hood drops away fast and the glass is shallow, so a parking block, a low wall, a toy in the driveway or a small pet can sit right in front of the bumper with no way to see it. That is front camera low visibility in a nutshell.

A camera in the grille fixes it. The BCAM13 has a 160 degree horizontal fisheye lens, so the picture shows the full width of the bumper with a slight curve at the edges. That curve is the point: it shows the corners as well as the middle. For the bigger case on why front cameras matter, read why you need a front camera.

Does the CS15A Fit Your Prius?

The CS15A supports the 2023 to 2026 Toyota Prius with the 8 inch or 12.3 inch factory display, and the 2023 to 2026 Prius Prime. It keeps the factory backup camera working, and reverse always takes priority when you shift into R. It is the interface module only. You also need a front camera, and we used the BCAM13. Five Things That Make the Prius Install Different

1. It shares a connector with the Encore Alpha amp

This customer already had our Encore Alpha amplifier, which uses the 28 pin connector behind the screen. The CS15A uses that same location plus the black 30 pin connector in the middle. Its harness has a connector A and a connector B, and connector A goes where the Encore Alpha was, next to the black 10 pin connector. Order does not really matter, but we stack the front camera harness first and the Encore Alpha harness after it, then back into the factory plug. Everything clicks together and nothing is cut. If you are adding sound too, see our Encore Alpha install on a 2026 Prius and the full plug and play amplifier lineup.

2. Getting the screen out

Pry off the small Prius badge trim beside the radio with a thin plastic tool. It runs further up than you expect, so go slowly. Lift off the large plastic cover behind it, then remove four 10 mm bolts, two on each side. Lay a thick blanket down and the display unclips straight out.

3. Power without tapping factory wires

The camera's own extension lead ends in power, ground and a video RCA. The CS15A harness supplies power and ground for the camera, so you never splice into a factory wire. On our install the bullet connectors were joined in advance; on yours you will make those connections yourself. The front camera RCA goes into the front camera input on the main CS15A harness. The spare RCA you will see is the second camera input, which can take a trailer, interior or other CVBS camera. It is off by default and is switched on in programming mode C. We taped each RCA and bullet joint on its own, then taped the pair together, and zip tied the bundle to the factory loom.

4. The firewall grommet on the new Prius

This was our first time through the firewall on the current generation Prius, and the grommet is not easy to reach. It sits deep in the engine bay. Follow the shiny metal brake lines back and you will find a rubber grommet that lines up with the area above the gas pedal inside the car. It has a cross slit you can open to pass the camera cable. From there we ran the cable around the ECU and fuse area, through a gap behind the reservoir, zip tied it to the frame, and down to the grille. Leave the camera end loose until you have decided where it mounts.

5. The button blank and the grille

The CS15A selector button is an OE style switch that fits a vacant blank. On this Prius the button is bigger than the opening, so we had to heavily modify the factory blank and grind out the inside. If you do not use a factory switch, for example the heated steering wheel in Southern California, you can remove it, leave its connector unplugged and tucked away, and put the camera button there instead. The factory blank's part number is printed on it if you want a spare to modify. Up front, the customer was keeping his front plate, so with his permission we trimmed along the V shaped section in the lower grille and built a custom bracket. Without a front plate, the flatter surface where the plate would sit is the better mounting spot.

Toyota Prius Front Camera Settings Worth Changing

Out of the box on our unit, one press shows the front camera for 15 seconds and a second press goes back to the factory screen. The CS15A timer can be set to 5, 10, 15 or 20 seconds, or disabled. We changed three things:

  • Timer off. The camera stays up until you press the button again.
  • Auto display under 9 mph. Slow down to park and the front view appears on its own, no hunting for the button.
  • Push to view rear camera. Press twice to see the rear camera while driving, handy for blind spots or checking a trailer. This is not available on every model and trim.

Each setting is made the same way: hold the camera button while switching the car on, release when the LED flashes, count the flashes, press to step through the options, then press and hold to save. The instruction manual lists every mode and flash count. Prius Front Camera FAQ

Does the CS15A come with a camera?

No. The CS15A is the interface module only. You need a front camera such as the BCAM13, which is sold separately.

Which Prius years and screens are supported?

2023 to 2026 Prius with the 8 inch or 12.3 inch factory display, plus the 2023 to 2026 Prius Prime.

Will my backup camera still work?

Yes. The factory backup camera works as normal and always takes priority when you shift into reverse.

Can the front camera come on by itself?

Yes. It can be programmed to display automatically at speeds under 9 mph.

Do I have to drill the grille?

Not always. The BCAM13 can screw to the grille or use the included double sided tape and adjustable bracket. On this Prius we trimmed the grille and made a custom bracket because the owner kept his front plate.
