2022 Toyota GR86 Build: Supercharged C-West | Beat-Social Ep. 15

This 2022 Toyota GR86 build is a great reminder that a clean car is not the same as a quiet one. In this episode of Beat-Social we sat down with Adriel from My Japan Direct, the shop that imports a lot of the rare JDM aero parts you do not usually see in the States, and walked through his red GR86. It is a daily driver, it is supercharged, and it wears a full C-West kit, yet the whole thing still reads as tasteful rather than loud.

The short version: Adriel's GR86 is a 2022 car built with intent, from the C-West aero to the Vortech supercharger, and the last piece was the audio. It was bone stock until we installed our plug-and-play DSP amplifier. If you are planning your own GR86, the lesson is to match every choice to how you actually drive.

Meet Adriel and the My Japan Direct GR86

Adriel runs in the My Japan Direct world, so he sees a lot of cars and a lot of parts. His own GR86 is a 2022, which makes it one of the earliest ones to land here. He wanted a white one and ended up with red, which he laughs is a pattern: his first-gen 86 and his ND Miata were both red too. The red seems to follow him, and on this car it works. You can catch the rest of the series and the gear behind these builds in our complete product catalog.

The exterior: a two-toned C-West GR86

The headline piece is the C-West body kit, imported through My Japan Direct, including the front lip, side skirts, and rear diffuser. Adriel two-toned it for a bit of depth rather than running the single color it normally comes in. He chose C-West specifically because the brand developed it through real Super Taikyu and time-attack work, so the aero is functional and adds downforce, not just looks. Lighting comes from AlphaRex headlights, a matching AlphaRex trunk bar light, and Valenti taillights that the trunk bar light fills in nicely.

Wheels, suspension, and brakes

The car sits on Volk TE37s, specifically the Saga S Plus, in 18 by 9.5 with a plus 43 offset, currently wrapped in 245/35 with room planned for a wider 255 down the road. Suspension is Apex N1 coilovers, and the exhaust is a single-exit Apex setup. Braking is handled by Project Mu street pads, and there is a Politz strut bar under the hood for a bit more chassis stiffness. The rear spoiler is the factory piece, which Adriel kept because the small OEM touch fits the rest of the car.

Under the hood: supercharged and daily driven

The biggest surprise is that the GR86 is supercharged by Vortech, and it is signed by Max Orido. Adriel has put around 40,000 miles on the supercharged setup, on a car with roughly 65,000 total miles, and he says it has been solid. It is mostly a daily driver with only a couple of track outings, where the one hiccup was an overheat that popped a hose, which they sorted out. His plans from here are more C-West, the over fenders and the wing, plus small touches like an under visor. It is a build that keeps growing without losing the plot.

The last piece of the build: the audio

For all that work, the audio in the GR86 was completely stock until this visit. The GR86 cabin is focused and minimal, which is great for driving but leaves the factory sound flat. The fix that fits a clean build is one that adds clarity and depth without tearing the interior apart, so we installed our plug-and-play DSP amplifier. It keeps the factory head unit and the tidy cabin, which is exactly the spirit of the rest of the car.

On the first listen Adriel could already hear more detail, which matters because he runs everything from intricate beats to electronic tracks on his daily drives. If you want to do the same on your own car, start with our plug-and-play amplifier collection, and if you are weighing whether it is worth it, our guide on how to make your car audio louder walks through the cleanest ways to get there. If speakers are also on your mind, our piece on the real benefits of new car speakers pairs well with the balanced approach Adriel took. You can also browse the newest gear in our latest releases.

Frequently asked questions

It is a 2022 Toyota GR86, owned by Adriel from My Japan Direct, and one of the earlier GR86s to reach the States.

Is the GR86 in the video supercharged?

Yes. It runs a Vortech supercharger, signed by Max Orido, with around 40,000 miles on the supercharged setup and roughly 65,000 miles on the car overall.

What is Beat-Social?

Beat-Social is our series where we meet owners and look closely at their cars and the stories behind the builds, instead of just listing parts.
