Toyota 4Runner Speaker Replacement: Norix Audio Plug-and-Play Speaker Kit Install
2017 Toyota 4Runner Speaker Replacement: Norix Audio Plug-and-Play Speaker Kit Install
The factory speakers in the 2017 Toyota 4Runner are full-range drivers doing their best to cover the entire frequency spectrum from a single cone. They work at low volumes, but push them hard and the limitations become obvious — compressed dynamics, loose bass, and rolled-off high frequencies that make everything sound flat. Replacing all six speakers with a plug-and-play system that uses factory-matched connectors and factory-matched mounting adapters is the most direct path to a significantly better listening experience, without touching the head unit or running any new wiring.
In this video, our team installs Beat-Sonic's plug-and-play speaker replacement kit on a customer's 2017 Toyota 4Runner, covering front door mid-bass woofers, rear door coaxial speakers, and dash tweeters at all four positions. Everything connects to the factory harness with no splicing. Watch the full install below.
Why Replace the Factory Speakers in a 2017 Toyota 4Runner
The 2017 4Runner without JBL uses a six-speaker system with full-range drivers in the front and rear doors and tweeters in the dash. Full-range speakers are a cost compromise — one driver handling bass, midrange, and treble simultaneously means none of those ranges can be optimized. The tweeter at the dash position helps with high-frequency imaging, but the full-range door speakers still color the midrange and produce bass that lacks definition at higher volumes.
A dedicated mid-bass woofer in the door handles low and mid frequencies with a driver designed for that range. A dedicated tweeter covers high frequencies from an optimized position and cone material. The result after swapping to a component-style system is immediately audible — cleaner separation between frequencies, more detail in the midrange, tighter bass, and significantly less distortion at higher volumes. On an off-road vehicle like the 4Runner where road noise from trail surfaces competes with audio, the improvement in clarity at volume is especially noticeable.
What Is Included in the Norix Audio 4Runner Speaker Kit
The kit covers all speaker positions in the 2017 Toyota 4Runner double cab. Front door mid-bass woofers use factory mounting hole locations and bolt in using the same four screws as the original speakers. Rear door coaxial speakers are direct replacements for the factory 6.5-inch units and use the same mounting hardware. Dash tweeters replace the factory tweeter units at the A-pillar or dash position using factory-matched brackets and factory-matched connectors. All speakers in the kit include plug-and-play harnesses — the factory connector plugs directly into the new speaker without any modification to the factory wiring.
The speaker kit is engineered and tuned to work with both the factory head unit and the Beat-Sonic ENA-3T1 Encore Alpha amplifier, so you can install the speakers with your current setup and add amplification later without revisiting any wiring.
Front Door Speaker Removal and Replacement
Removing the front door panel on the 2017 4Runner starts with two trim covers — one near the door handle and one below it — each held by clips and concealing Phillips screws behind them. With those screws out, the door panel pulls away from the door starting at the lower edge, releasing the perimeter clips as you work around. Before fully removing the panel, disconnect the door switch cables — white connector to the top position, green to the bottom — and the main door harness connector and lower connector, both released by pressing the tab and pulling straight out.
The factory door speaker sits behind the panel secured by four 10mm bolts or Phillips screws. Remove them, disconnect the factory connector, and the speaker lifts out. The Beat-Sonic replacement drops into the same location, the factory connector plugs directly in, and the factory screws go back in the same holes. The front door panel goes back on in reverse order — reconnect both cable connectors and the door harness, align the clips, and press the panel in firmly around the perimeter before reinstalling the Phillips screws behind the trim covers.
Rear Door Speaker Removal and Replacement
The rear door panel on the 2017 4Runner follows the same general process as the front. Trim covers pry off to expose Phillips screws, the panel releases from its clips, and the door switch connectors disconnect before the panel comes fully free. Always note the cable orientation — white on top, green on bottom — before disconnecting. The factory rear speaker uses three 10mm bolts and a factory connector that releases with a tab press. The Beat-Sonic rear coaxial replacement uses the same bolt pattern and the same factory connector. Reinstall in reverse, paying attention to connector orientation before clipping the door panel back into place.
On a vehicle that sees off-road use, the door panel clips may have accumulated dust and grit in the clip receivers. Clean them out before pressing the panel back in to ensure all clips seat fully and the panel doesn't rattle on trail. Magnetic tools for the 10mm bolts are strongly recommended for both the front and rear doors — losing a bolt inside a door cavity on a dusty 4Runner is a significant inconvenience.
Tweeter Replacement at the Dash Position
The factory tweeters on the 2017 4Runner sit behind grille covers in the dash or A-pillar area. The grille cover pries off with a plastic panel removal tool — it's held only by clips. Behind it, two 10mm bolts secure the tweeter bracket to the dash structure. Remove the bolts holding the tweeter itself, not the ones securing the bracket to the dash. Disconnect the factory connector with a tab press and pull. The Norix Audio tweeter uses a factory-matched bracket that aligns to the same mounting holes, the same 10mm bolts, and the same factory connector. Reinstall the grille cover by aligning the clip posts and pressing it back in.
Repeat the same process for the passenger side. The tweeter positions point directly toward the listening position, so the improvement in high-frequency imaging after replacing the factory tweeters with dedicated silk dome units is immediately noticeable — instruments and vocals gain a sense of location in the soundstage that the factory system doesn't produce.
Pairing the Speaker Kit with the ENA-3T1 Amplifier
The speaker kit delivers a substantial improvement on the factory head unit's built-in amplification. Pairing it with the Beat-Sonic ENA-3T1 Encore Alpha amplifier takes the combination further. The ENA-3T1 is a plug-and-play 4-channel amplifier for 2014–2019 Toyota models including the 4Runner. It connects behind the factory radio using the same factory harness connectors, adding clean external amplification to all four channels without any wiring changes to the speaker side of the install.
The speaker kit and the ENA-3T1 together address both sides of the factory audio limitation — the speakers now have drivers optimized for their frequency ranges, and the amplifier gives those drivers the clean power they need to perform at that level. The result is the kind of dynamic range, bass definition, and high-frequency clarity that the factory system, regardless of volume, cannot produce.
2017 Toyota 4Runner Speaker Upgrade Without JBL
This installation applies to the 2017 Toyota 4Runner without the JBL premium audio system. The non-JBL 4Runner uses a standard six-speaker layout with factory connectors that match the Beat-Sonic kit directly. JBL-equipped 4Runners use a different amplifier and signal topology and are not compatible with this kit.
For 4Runner owners on the 2020 and newer generation who want amplification, the Beat-Sonic ENX-T312 DSP amplifier is a plug-and-play option for the 2020+ 4Runner without JBL, with vehicle-specific pre-tuned DSP settings loaded at the factory. It pairs with aftermarket speakers at 4 ohms impedance for optimal performance.
