Use your OEM backup camera with aftermarket head units.

We want to talk about backup cameras today, since it became one of the most talked about subject these days. Majority of the Japanese brand vehicles manufactured after Nov. 2013 are equipped with the factory screen as a standard option, and options such as navigation and backup camera can be added upon request.  Now, as of late 2014 many of the Japanese brand vehicles are equipped with the factory screen and backup camera as a standard option; soon all vehicles driven on the street will have the backup cameras as mandated by law.

Quality of the factory equipped backup cameras are not bad, especially the ones on the Japanese brand vehicles. You normally don't stare at the monitor any more than 3 seconds while you are backing up, and that is probably one of the reason why you don't complain about the backup camera quality. (if the movie was displayed on the screen in that quality, you probably would complain) How about the factory screen/infotainment system? Do you like'em? They are mostly old tech. and has limited functions. Good head units w/ touch screen, Bluetooth and all the other recent tech. can be purchased between $300~$1,000 these days.

If you want to upgrade your head unit but keep the factory backup camera working, you must know few things:

  1. Factory backup camera video output wires are not RCA, whereas video input (backup camera designated port) on the aftermarket head unit is always RCA.
  2. There's no way to connect the factory backup camera to the aftermarket head unit without cutting bunch of wires.
  3. Almost all factory backup cameras on Japanese brand vehicles are designed to operate at 6v, so you need a converter to transform 12v to 6v.

Yes, retaining the factory backup camera is bit complicated. However, if we didn't have a product to simplify the process, we wouldn't be writing this blog, would we? Behold, the BC1 backup camera interface adapter.

BC1 is the interface that converts 12v to 6v so that your factory backup camera is safely operated. In addition, it also provides RCA video input connection, so you just need to plug it in to the matching video input port on the aftermarket head unit.

You need an additional adapter called BC6, BC18, BC28EP or BCS29 depending on the vehicle you own. Video connectors attached to the factory backup camera are car specific (meaning, they are all different), you will need a car specific adapter. This adapter will allow you to connect your factory backup camera connector directly to the BC1 without cutting wires. Hassle free.

I don't see an adaptor for a 2008 Toyota Tundra with-out JBL, with factory back-up cam, with-out Nav. Or will the BC1 + BC28EP work?

      Hello Mark.
      Thank you for your inquiry.
      BC1 + BC28EP would only work on 2014-2016 models and BC1 + BC18 works only on a 2007-2009 Tundra with OEM Navigation.
Plug and Play installation product is not available for your Tundra, but there's still a way to achieve your goal.
BC1SUS will allow you to integrate the OEM backup camera to the aftermarket head unit, but it requires cutting of the factory video wires (V+, V-, CGND, CA+) and need to solder them to the corresponding wires on the BC1SUS.
